Cougar wrestlers do well in New Mexico

    The Cougar Wrestling Club traveled to Farmington, New Mexico for the Aztec Warrior National Wrestling Tournament. The team from Oracle took seven wrestlers to the tournament which had 1,800 kids competing, some from as far away as Nebraska and Montana. The wrestlers and their records at the tournament were:

  Sophia Smith 57 pound division – 14 wins 5 losses, 1st Place Rookie, 2nd Place Freestyle, 3rd Place Championship and 4th Place Greco-Roman style.

  D.J. Small 50 pounds – 14 wins 6 losses, 2nd Place Rookie, 5th Place Championship, 2nd Place Freestyle, and 4th Place Greco.

  Miles Smith 77 pounds – 5th Place Freestyle.

  Charles Croci 73 pounds – 12 wins 4 losses, 3rd Championship, 2nd Place Freestyle, 4th Place Greco.

  Jacob Tafoya 89 lbs – 12 wins 3 losses, 1st Place Rookie, 2nd Place Freestyle, 4th Place Championship.

  Victor Fittz 114 lbs – 4th Place Freestyle.

  Gilbert Rodriguez 80 lbs – 11 wins 0 losses, 1st Place Championship, 1st Place Freestyle and 1st Place Greco.

  Coach Gilbert Rodriguez said, “These kids have worked hard these last few weeks getting ready for this tournament. We came home with three trophies and 15 medals.”

  The coach’s “Beast of the Week” is Sophia Smith. “She put it all together and did a great job beating some good kids,” Rodriguez said.
