Lobos win Lions Club tourney in Morenci

  A second game loss sent the Lobos to the consolation bracket at the 44th Annual Lions Club Tournament in Morenci, but that didn’t stop them from winning the whole shebang!

  The Lobos spent last week competing in the Morenci tournament. The first game the boys played of the tournament was against the Safford Bulldogs, where the Lobos were able to come out on top with a 5-1 final score.

  The second game the boys played was against host Morenci. The Lobos came out swinging, posting 3 runs, while giving up 1. The second inning saw neither team post any runs. In the third inning, Morenci scored 3 runs. During the fourth inning Hayden scored 1 run. The fifth inning saw Morenci score 2 runs. The Lobos scored 2 runs in the sixth inning, making the game a tie. In the seventh inning, no runs were posted, sending them into the eighth inning. The Lobos were only able to post 1 run, but gave up 2, making it a tough 7-8 loss.

  On the consolation side of the bracket, the Lobos came back ready to play during day two. The boys played against Florence. The Lobos took the win with a 3-0 final score over the Gophers.

  The Lobos started day three meeting back up with Morenci on the diamond. The Lobos did not hesitate to stick it to the Wildcats, only letting them post 2 runs during the game. The boys came out of their second encounter against Morenci with a 5-2 win, sending them into the championship game against Mogollon.

  The Lobos came out ready to play. The boys took the lead with 2 runs by the third inning. Mogollon was able to gain control of the game when they scored 5 runs in the fourth inning. By the end of the fifth inning the Lobos claimed control again and climbed up to 13 runs. The Lobos kept control for the remainder of the game, and came out with a 15-6 final score, making the Lobos the champions of the 44th Annual Lions Club Tournament.

  On Saturday, April 6, the Lady Lobos softball team traveled to take on Williams. The girls suffered a tough 0-18 loss against the Vikings. The rest of last week wasn’t much better for the Hayden softball team. They began their week with an away game at Miami. The girls put up a tough fight but fell short against the Vandals. The final score of the game was 1-3. The Lady Lobos closed out their week with a home game against Joseph City. Putting up another tough battle, the girls fell short in the 2-20 game.

  The Hayden baseball team also traveled to take on Williams on Saturday, April 6. During the first inning, Williams scored 1 run, and the second inning saw then score 2 more. The Lobos weren’t able to post any runs until the fifth inning, when they scored 2 runs, but gave up 1. In the sixth inning, both teams score 1 run each. The seventh inning saw the boys score 1 run, but it would end up being a run too short. The boys took a tough 4-5 loss against the Vikings.
