Globe Basketball Players Honored on Senior Night

The Tigers boys’ and girls’ basketball teams each honored three seniors before the girls’ varsity game versus Coolidge on Wednesday night.

Timecah Cosen, Yvonne Lonnie, and Keanna Moses were the three senior Lady Tigers playing their final game in front of the home fans at Tiger Gymnasium.

The Lady Tigers, who needed to a win to keep alive any hope for a berth in next week’s sectional tournament, were eliminated after a 63 – 32 loss to a Lady Bears’ team fighting for the regular-season section title.

Moses finished with two points, two rebounds, and three assists in the loss. Cosen and Lonnie were held scoreless in the game.

The boys’ team, which entered the game against the Bears still with a chance to claim the regular season title, honored seniors Robert Holmes, Chris Gonzales, and Trevor Imhoff on Wednesday night.

Unfortunately, the 19th-ranked Tigers could not send off the senior trio victorious in their home finale, and likely cost themselves the regular-season title in the process, after a 69 – 67 loss.

Holmes scored 10 points while Imhoff finished with three in the game. Super-frosh BJ Burries poured in a game-high 29 points in the losing effort.

Both teams will close out their regular seasons on Friday night at American Leadership Academy in Queen Creek. The Lady Tigers are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the boy’s game will follow with a 7 p.m. scheduled tipoff.

The boys’ team has clinched a berth in next week’s Section V Tournament, which will take place at ALA, beginning on Thursday, Feb. 11. The Tigers will like face Florence in the opening round of the four-team tournament.

Globe Coed Spirit Team Wins State Championship

In addition to honoring six senior basketball players before Wednesday’s varsity games, the Tigers’ Spiritline Team was recognized for winning the 2016 AIA Div. II Coed Spirit State Championship.

After qualifying for the state finals back in November, the Tigers claimed the state title on Jan. 23 at Grand Canyon University.

Lady Braves Claim Regular-Season Title

The No. 3-ranked San Carlos girls’ basketball team remains undefeated in section games, improving to 11 – 0 after recent wins against Mogollon and Superior. With only one game remaining in the regular season, the Lady Braves have clinched the regular-season Section IV title and the top-seed in next week’s sectional tournament.

Now 24 – 2 on the season, the Lady Braves defeated Superior 83 – 14 on Tuesday night thanks in part to a triple-double – 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists – from Adrianna Haozous, who was one of three Lady Braves to score in double figures against the Lady Panthers.

Mariah Kozie, a senior, scored a game-high 25 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the field to go along with five rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Raeana Antonio finished with 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting, including 3 of 4 from behind the three-point arc. The senior also contributed two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Freshman Beyonce Cutter led the team by recording six of the Lady Braves’ 21 steals in the win.

The Lady Braves finish the regular season at home on Friday versus Hayden, when they’ll honor their seniors on Senior Night. The game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

As the top-seed in the next week’s Section IV Tournament, the Lady Braves have earned a bye and will face the winner of the No. 4 versus No. 5-seed game on Thursday, Feb. 11 at Thatcher High School.

Vandals Win Seventh-Straight, Clinch Tourney Bye

The No. 14-ranked Miami boys’ basketball will ride a seven-game winning streak into next week’s Section IV Tournament, which will take place at Thatcher High School, beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

As a result finishing with a section record of 9 – 1, good enough for second place in the standings, the Vandals are one of two teams that earned a first-round bye. They’ll face the winner between the No. 6 versus No. 3-seed on Thursday, Feb. 12 at Thatcher High School.

Nine seniors played their last home game of their high school careers on Tuesday night, a 71 – 60 victory against No. 12 Ft. Thomas.

Trevor Horta, Gabe Arrellin, Logan Perry, Ben Sotello, Alfonso Tuttle, Matt Lisk, Ryan Baker, Jacob Mabbitt, and Chris Mejia were the Vandals honored on Senior Night.
