Community School wrestlers compete in New Mexico

Local wrestlers and their medals.

Wrestlers from the Hayden, Oracle and San Manuel Community Schools wrestling programs traveled to Farmington, New Mexico, May 1 – 3, to participate in the Aztec Warrior Championships. With over 1600 wrestlers from 10 states, Community wrestlers competed in folk style, freestyle and Greco tournaments.

Folk style Results:

Darrin Smith- Champion @ 40lbs

Samico Salazar: Champion at HWT

Rocky Andrade- Champion at HWT, 4th at HWT

Anthony Saiz- 3rd place at 37lbs

DJ Small- 3rd place at 50lbs

Daniel Najera- 4th place at 52lbs, 6th place at 55lbs

Freestyle Results:

Darrin Smith- Champion at 40lbs

Rocky Andrade- Champion at HWT

Daniel Najera- 2nd place at 52lbs, 2nd place at 55lbs

Anthony Saiz- 2nd place at 37lbs

DJ Small- 3rd place at 50 lbs

Marcus Celaya- 4th place at 52lbs

Sophia Smith- 5th place at 57lbs

Samico Salazar- 6th place at 62lbs

Greco Results:

Darrin Smith- Champion at 40lbs

Rocky Andrade- 2nd place at HWT

Daniel Najera- 2nd place at 55lbs

DJ Small- 3rd place at 50 lbs

Rocky Andrade, who captured the HWT State Championship at USA Wrestling Folk style State in February, recently won the Greco State Championship. Andrade can become the first Community School Wrestler to earn the Triple Crown, the most prestigious wrestling accomplishment in USA Wrestling, if he is able to win a Freestyle State Championship.

Wrestlers will finish their season next weekend at the USA Wrestling Freestyle State Championships at Highland High School.
