Since this cohort of students began their educational journey at Superior Unified School District, their teachers and school administrators have commented that this is one of the most competitive classes in both academics and athletics. It is no surprise that Lindsay Duarte and Hunter Flanagan have tied for the role of class Valedictorian with Matthew Zavala earned the title of Salutatorian.

These three spent most of their high school years being honored for class awards and as they advanced in their schooling they were recognized with academic scholarships and other awards recognizing them for their achievements. The three will give their speeches at the SHS Commencement Exercises on Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m.

Lindsay Duarte is the daughter of Billy Duarte and Carmen Chaidez. Following graduation Lindsay will attend Grand Canyon University where she will study to become an Occupational Therapist. She was inspired to become an Occupational Therapist after she had the opportunity to work with disabled children. “I want to serve a higher purpose,” she explained.

Hunter Flanagan is the daughter of Michael and Lillian Flanagan. Hunter will attend Arizona State University where she will work to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She has not decided on a nursing specialization at this time and looking forward to learning more about which field she will pursue in nursing. “I have always wanted to work in the medical field and help people in their everyday lives,” she explained. Hunter has taken classes from the Cobre Valley Institute of Technology (CVIT) which has helped her begin her nursing career

Matthew Zavala is the son of Michael and Kathy Zavala. Matthew has decided to attend Arizona State University where he will major in Mechanical Engineering. Matthew a self proclaimed comic book nerd said he was inspired to become a mechanical engineer because he wants to do what Tony Stark (Ironman) does. “I want to do that,” he said. After completing his degree, he would like to be employed by Raytheon. Matthew also completed the welding program from CVIT, he plans to use his welding certification to work part time while he is attending the university.

The Superior Sun sat down with these students on their last official day of high school. As we passed through the lunch room, underclassmen were hugging them and saying their goodbyes. They were handing out invitations and, of course, enjoying their last day of school. But despite their excitement about the day and the state tournament play in the evening, they had some words of wisdom for future SHS students and graduates and shared some memories about school.

For Matthew one significant moment was sliding into home plate to win the baseball game vs Ray at home. “Anytime we beat Ray or San Manuel is a good memory,” Hunter explained.

“There are just too many good memories to pick just one,” said Lindsay. “I am going to miss being with my friends every day.” Matthew said he is going to miss the teachers, friends and the teams he has played with.

When asked what advice they would give to underclassmen and upcoming high schoolers, they had lots to offer.

“Take advantage of all the clubs and programs,” said Matthew.

“Challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone,” said Hunter.

Overall the three said, “Have fun in high school and make the most of it.”
