On Monday while most of the students from Superior Unified School District were probably sleeping in or enjoying a day off from school on Martin Luther King birthday or Civil Rights Day as Arizona observes the holiday, several junior high and high school students took to Main Street to sweep sidewalks and rake dirt areas of the sidewalk.

The volunteer activity was coordinated by Roy Chavez, who has taken part in other MLK day of service activities in Phoenix and Eloy. He coordinated the event to provide local students with an opportunity to earn community service and also create an opportunity to teach students about the importance of giving back to the community.

About 14 students participated in the event and they swept, raked and picked up trash from the top of Main Street to Pinal Ave. Two of the students are taking child development and had to take their “Think it Over” robotic babies to the event. Chavez hopes to get more people involved in a day of service for next year.

With the students hard at work, Main Street is looking good and is ready for the Home Tour this coming weekend.
