Local artist Aviva Gold will present a workshop that guides participants in creation of a personal art piece on Saturday, May 21, at Oracle State Park. The following day, widely known geologist Bob Scarborough will give a program on “Geology of the Catalina Mountain Region” and lead a trail walk. Both events are free with park admission.
Art Medicine Woman and internationally acclaimed author, artist, and therapist, Gold is a master facilitator of “Drawing from the Source.” No art experience is necessary, but reservation is required for the 2 p.m. workshop, due to limited space. Her workshop begins outside with participants taking a short solitary walk or sitting quietly to take in the surrounding beauty. Participants then create a spirit drawing in oil pastels and nature materials that expresses their experience. Presented with the support of Friends of Oracle State Park.
Scarborough’s program begins at 9:30 a.m., and covers the geology of Oracle State Park, San Pedro River Valley, Galiuro range, and local mountains. Reservation suggested.
Oracle Sate Park park is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays; park admission is $7 per car at the main gate on Mt. Lemmon Rd. in Oracle. Guided tours of the historic Kannally ranch house are scheduled for 11 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday. The 45-minute tour visits rooms and patios extending down the hillside. The multi-level Mediterranean-Revival style house, built in 1929-33 by one of the earliest cattle ranching families in Oracle, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. An exhibit of impressionistic-style cowboy paintings by self-taught artist Lee Kannally is on display in the living room and dining room.
