Apache Junction– The Arizona Lecture Series, presented by the Apache Junction Unified School District Performing Arts Center, continues Monday, January 26, 2015, at 7 pm with “Armed with our Language, We Went to War: Navajo Code Talkers,” by Laura Tohe. During WWII, a small group of Navajo men enlisted in the Marines with a unique armor. This select group of men devised a code using the Navajo language to pass secret information without the enemy ever deciphering or breaking the code. Laura Tohe will discuss how the code was devised and used through personal quotes from the Marines, why the men enlisted, and display several photos – including personal photos from Dr. Tohe’s family.

Laura Tohe is a Professor with Distinction in Indigenous Literature at Arizona State University. She holds a Ph.D. in Indigenous American Literature, and is an author, librettist, and award-winning poet.

Coming on February 2, the Arizona Lecture Series hosts wilderness photographer and off-trail explorer Lon McAdam with “Seasons in the Superstitions.”  McAdam will blend photographs and back country knowledge to take you to seldom seen vistas covering all four seasons from the tops of summits in the Superstition Wilderness.

Tickets are available for $5 and may be purchased at the door, at the AJUSD District Office, or online at www.ajusd.org by clicking on the ‘Community’ tab, then ‘PAC Tickets.’
