By Mayor Sam Hosler, Town of Kearny (Arizona)

The people of Kearny have chosen Debra Sommers to be Mayor of the town. She will take office in January, and new Council Members Rose Bradford and Samantha Misita will be sworn in on the same day.

It was a close election. Unofficial results show 724 votes cast, with 372 for Sommers and 352 for Hosler.

I congratulate Debra. She has 12 years of previous experience serving as Mayor of Kearny. She is bright and knowledgeable and I know that she has our best interests at heart. I offer to work with her over the next two months so that the transition will be a smooth one.

Many students of Ray High School are working with our Journey for a Clean Kearny group, making plans for teams of students who will offer their services to clean yards and vacant lots. There is a need for equipment to help them in their work. Any citizens with some loose bills in their pocket are invited to call Town Manager Anna Flores (363-5547) to make the purchase of two lawn mowers and string trimmers possible. Another way to help is by donating rakes, hoes, and shovels for the use of the students. Simply bring them to Town Hall.

Residents who would like to have their yards or lots cleaned may call Town Hall and give their name and address. A date for the cleaning will be arranged.

The Kearny Town Council will hold its regular meeting on Monday, Nov. 21. The busy agenda includes the canvass of the recent election, a presentation by Ken Hall (the Director of the Central Arizona Governments), a presentation on Pinal County’s United Way by Manny Bowler, action on the development agreement with the Family Dollar store, a presentation on the new equipment purchased for our Volunteer Fire Department, and consideration of an new schedule on the financial honorarium given to firefighters after responding to calls.

The second Farmer’s Market/Swap Meet sponsored by the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce will be held this Saturday, Nov. 19, at 4 p.m. in the courtyard of the General Kearny Inn on Alden Road. The event proved to be very successful last month, and we can hope that the momentum will grow. I hope to see you there.
