Communities throughout the world depend on their local non-profit organizations.  In many communities it is not uncommon to see multiple non-profits and community groups working together for a common goal, maybe its to address homelessness, hosting an event or working on a community project. Without the work of many volunteers and these organization, many things would not be accomplished, especially in small rural communities.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars in Superior, Arizona has been serving the community of Superior for well over 50 years. As the community has changed, the VFW has seen its good days and bad days. But despite any challenges the organization may have faced, they have never forgotten their mission to serve the veterans of Superior and the surrounding areas.  Their building has served as a meeting and bingo hall as well as a venue for many weddings, showers, birthdays and memorials.  They have welcomed home veterans and said goodbye to long time comrades at the hall on Main Street.

Today, the VFW is growing in size as many locals have joined as an auxiliary member or local qualifying veterans are joining up to help support their comrades.  One of the plans the post has is to bring in a Veterans Administration representative to help local vets with services and needs that they may have.  They are also focussing on educating their members and other local veterans on their benefits and services available to them and providing more information on the Affordable Care Act and Social Security.  They plan to have these forums in the near future.  They will have some outreach events and fundraiser corn hole tournament during the Prickly Pear Festival.

“We want the post to be more than just a bar in the community,” explained Commander Tom Lindsay.  He serves alongside Mike Montiel who is the Quartermaster for the post.

Anyone who has served overseas during a foreign war may join the VFW.  Those who have had immediate family members who have served overseas during a foreign war may join the auxiliary.  Membership is $35 a year and has many benefits.  The Post has many events and activities being planned and they plan to further support many of the other community groups and their activities.
