Superior – Have you considered entering the Second Annual Pinal County Open Spaces and Trails Photo Contest? You definitely should! Entries will be accepted during the whole month of August. The theme is “People Enjoying Pinal County,” and entry could hardly be easier, more convenient, or, and inexpensive.

You just upload your best JPGs on the contest’s Facebook page. There’s no printing, framing or

cost. Its a great way to get your images published online, maybe even in print, and you could win a prize that will take your photography to another artistic level. The winner of April’s contest won a personal shoot coached by Gold Canyon Pro Photographer, Sue Tatterson.

Search Facebook with keywords “Pinal County Open Spaces and Trails Photo Contest” to connect. If you need subject matter for this contest, check out events any weekend at one of Pinal County’s crown jewels: Boyce Thompson Arboretum (BTA).

On Saturday, Aug. 8, you can photograph the camera-ready ‘Wild Man Phil’ or photogenic Abi King handling colorful reptiles, delighting audiences when they guide their popular Learn Your Lizards walk, which starts at 8 a.m. and is included with $10 daily admission to BTA Or practice after-dark camera skill, once night falls, composing portraits while, exploring dark garden paths, lit by the headlamps of participants, on a Scorpion Walk for BTA members on Saturday, Aug. 15.

How about a vignette portrait of a family enjoying a shady picnic together beneath the tamarisk and pine trees of our picnic area, or taking their canine compadre along for a dog walk just after dawn? Even if you just use a point-and-shoot or a smartphone camera, learn to harness the horsepower of your camera during a class with Sue Tatterson, an engaging instructor who offers a basic camera class again on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. Her beginners’ classes are a smokin’ deal at $20 for BTA members, and, participants have heaped praise on her relaxed, low-key instructional style.

Kimberly called Sue “a great teacher with knowledge and enthusiasm.Thoroughly enjoyed her class!” While Marge wrote: “She’s easy to work with, extremely helpful, fun and interesting,” and Richard described her as “A natural teacher and a delight to spend time with in the field.”

Spaces remain available for her Sunday morning class Aug. 9. With your credit card ready, call 520-689-2723 to enroll. Check out this talented photographer’s style, find links to her work and a direct link to that Pinal County contest page at ag.arizona.edu/bta.
