Thanks to a federal government program, the Mammoth Police Department has received some military surplus equipment that will benefit the department and town.
The Police Department received a Humvee, a large portable generator mounted on a trailer and eight assault rifles. The equipment received was at no cost to the Town of Mammoth. The 1033 Military Surplus Property Program allows for surplus military property to be given to law enforcement agencies around the country.
Mammoth Police Chief Steve Nash applied for some of the equipment. The vehicle, he said, will allow the police department to respond to emergencies in rough terrain such as the road to Copper Creek. The truck bed body style allows for a stretcher to be used if necessary.
The portable generator and trailer were designed to be compatible with the Humvee. The trailer can be transported to remote areas and supply power during power outages or at accident scenes if needed. It can also be used for DUI checkpoints. The Hummer may also be used to take equipment up to and check on a radio repeater station that is located in a remote area in the Galiuros. The eight assault rifles will replace old shotguns that the department currently has.
