A Mammoth senior citizens group met at the Mammoth Christian Youth Center on Wednesday, June 11. Guest speakers for the luncheon were Senator Barbara McGuire and candidate for Representative in Legislative District 8, Carmen Casillas. Casillas, a Democrat, will be running against T.J. Shope.
Following lunch, Frances Wickham introduced LD 8 Senator McGuire. The senator spoke about the changes in DES and the new agency replacing CPS. She said it will improve the safety of our children.
Senator McGuire was one of the first legislators to call for the resignation of the V.A. director after the recent scandal at the Phoenix V.A. Hospital.
“We need to take care of our veterans,” McGuire said, which received applause from the seniors in attendance. McGuire said that there is talk in the legislature about doing away with the state income tax and raising the sales tax. The senator said she believes in securing our borders but it needs to be handled with dignity. “They are human beings and we need to respect that,” she said.
Carmen Casillas then spoke. She said that public education and immigration reform are important issues to her. Carmen is a former vice-mayor and council member for the City of Globe. She was co-founder of the Boys and Girls Club and a victim advocate.
Both Senator McGuire and Casillas answered questions from the audience.
The Mammoth senior group will begin meeting regularly at the Mammoth Christian Youth Center.
