Just a five minute drive west of Superior the Boyce Thompson Arboretum is alive with blooming flowers and cactus, birds and other critters. Recently the Superior preschoolers were able to tour the arboretum. The arboretum consists of two miles of trails and a place where children can learn about the beauty and importance of our desert ecosystem.

JFK Superior Preschool teacher Kathy Zavala said, “The children enjoyed seeing the large trees in the Eucalyptus Forest, watching the ducks diving for fish at Ayer Lake, and wondered what it was like living in a house made out of rock that they discovered in the Herb Garden.  We had a picnic lunch next to the Demonstration Garden where we saw butterflies, hummingbirds, and many varieties of plants and flowers.”

With over 3,200 plants the preschoolers had plenty to look at and learn about. More than 230 birds and 72 terrestrial species have occupied the Arboretum over the years some are permanent and others are migratory residents. The preschoolers had a fun and wonderful time at the arboretum.

The arboretum hours through April are daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and in May hours will be 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. For more information about the arboretum the website is www.arboretum.ag.arizona. Take it from the youth the time is right to get out and enjoy our great surroundings!
