Bobby Cook, Wyatt Earp and a piece of Vegas to perform during Superior’s Mining Festival

The Superior Chamber of Commerce is offering a $2,000 purse for the winner of the hard rock mining competition on Saturday.

The 26th annual Apache Leap Mining Festival is this weekend and the Superior Chamber of Commerce has a full line up of events, entertainment and vendors to entertain everyone in the family.

The festival kicks off into high gear on Saturday with a parade at 10 a.m. The theme for the Apache Leap Mining Festival celebrates the history of the Magma Arizona Rail Road Company (MARRCo). Bruce Wittig, retired employee from the MARRCo, will be the grand marshal for the parade. Following the parade the annual chihuahua races and mining competition will commence.

There is plenty of free entertainment scheduled throughout the day. Superiorite Bobby Cook will reunite with his former band mate Manuel “Punky” Sanchez from the band Phoenix. Cook has been performing in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace the “M” and the Cosmopolitan. New to the festival this year will be SambAZ dancers, they are a Vegas style dance group with head feathers and all. “The men will drool and the ladies will pretend to be embarrassed but will love it! They will also mingle with the crowd for photos,” explained Sue Anderson, chamber president. Returning to the festival line up this year is Wyatt Earp who will perform an excerpt from his play, the Apache Crown Dancers from the White Mountain Apache Tribe and Wildman Phil will perform his comedic routine with his desert animals. Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior will also return to the stage on Sunday. There will be a street dance and beer garden on Saturday night.

The annual carnival will operate Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Pre-sale, unlimited ride wristbands are available at Save Money Market for $20, the price during the carnival for the unlimited ride wristband will be $30.
