Kearny pool in need of major repairs

Summer just isn’t summer for kids in Kearny without meeting up with their friends at the swimming pool for a day of fun in the sun. But this year, summer may be very different for Kearny residents who use the pool.

With more than $220,000 in pool repairs needed, it may be a while before the pool can be opened.

Town Manager Anna Flores reported that the fiberglass in the pool needed to be replaced in order for the pool to remain safe and they also checked to make sure there were no other structural damages to the pool. Fortunately for the community there was no structural damage found at the pool but they did determine that the plumbing was in need of repairs and replacements. The cost to fix the fiberglass and plumbing is going to cost $220,000, and if the funds are raised in time the pool can be repaired and open in time for the summer swim season. The funds for these repairs are not available in the town budget; with decreasing revenues and other infrastructure costs it is not possible of the town to fund these repairs with their budget.

To help fund the repairs the town received $8,000 from Resolution Copper and from ASARCO to help with some of the initial inspections. Engineers from Resolution Copper also helped with some of the initial inspections. The town has applied for three different grants to help fund the repairs but have not heard a response on those applications as of press time. The Kearny Rotary, the GKI and Misitas Enterprises have taken up the task of fundraising for the repairs, the trio has started a Go Fund Me account and will also host a steak dinner and dance with a live band on May 9, 2015.
