San Manuel wrestler Franky Renteria (160) finished runner-up in his weight class at the 2016 AIA Division IV State Wrestling Championships, which took place last weekend in Prescott Valley.

Renteria, a two-time state qualifier and the No. 2-seed at this year’s tournament, was called for three false-penalties in the championship match, allowing No. 1-seed Brock Slade of Mogollon to come-from-behind to claim the 8 – 4 decision.

“Nothing like that has ever happened to me,” Slade told azcentral sports. “But I’ll take it.”

Miners’ freshman Julian Rodriguez (120) and Renteria, a junior, were San Manuel’s state qualifiers this season. The Miner’s finished tied for 23rd in the Division IV team standings out of over 40 teams.
