Copper Area News

For those Tri-Community residents interested in genealogy and tracing their family roots, a new local resource is available.

On Saturday, May 2, the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints in San Manuel hosted an open house for its brand new Family History Center. A good crowd attended, enjoying displays of family histories, photographs and memorabilia set up for viewing including old items such as a Singer sewing machine, a table butter churn and a gramophone. But the best part was the opportunity to learn how to research family history.

The Family History Center has 10 computers set up with genealogical programs that will be open to the public for people to research their family history. Some of the programs you will learn to use are Family Search; Find a Grave; Footnote; Roots Web; Roots Magic; and My Past. Volunteer staff will assist people, providing hands on experience with their research while showing them how to use the computer to search for their family history. The staff can show you how to start your family history, how to organize what you have already collected, how to research and verify your records using the computer programs available, how to set up an account on Family Search, how to fill out a family group sheet, and much more.

Use of the Family History Center is free. Sharon Evans is the San Manuel Family History Center Director. Group workshops are available as well as one on one training sessions.

The Family History Center is located in the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, 101 S. Giffen Avenue in San Manuel. The Center is open Tuesday: 4-8 p.m.; Wednesday: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.; and Thursday: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. It is closed the fourth Thursday of the month.

If you would like to learn more about the Center or volunteer, contact Sharon at the Family History Center at (520) 385-4855 or visit during its open hours.
