Winkelman Mayor Louis Bracamonte, the council and staff received an award for being the Waste Water Treatment Plant of the Year. Mayor Bracamonte presented the award at the September council meeting. For several years the town was faced with mounting violations at the WWTP from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, the council and staff set out to develop and fund a plan to make the needed repairs. The award came from the Rural Water Association of Arizona.
The Winkelman Town Council late last month approved an agreement with the Town of Hayden to allow the Hayden Police Department to provide police services for the Town of Winkelman. The Town of Winkelman will pay $70,000 to the Town of Hayden for patrol and investigative services.
The Hayden officers will be expected to enforce the laws of the state as well as the Winkelman Town Code. Cost for special events hosted by Winkelman will be charged as appropriate.
During the September Council meeting, the possibility of reduced patrols in Winkelman was discussed, due to the increased costs of law enforcement. But Winkelman Mayor Louis Bracamonte and Hayden Mayor Bobby Smith assured that there would still be patrols in Winkelman.
The Communities of Kearny, Hayden, Winkelman and Mammoth have been researching and planning for the creation of a joint police department that would create efficiencies for the communities and also allow for cost sharing amongst the communities.
