A group of citizens living in San Manuel have organized to clean up the town. Earlier this spring, 11 volunteers met at the Sun Life Family Health Center and began cleaning up the median and street at the entrance to San Manuel. They cut grass, pulled weeds, and picked up trash. The group hopes to make the “Start at the Street” clean up a regular event. They also are willing to help those that are elderly and/or disabled and no longer physically capable of manual labor clean up their yards.
Debbie Pfaff helped organize the group. She said, “We have to take ownership; it is not a company town anymore.” Debbie has been teaching for 40 years and is currently teaching at the STEM School in Mammoth. “I love living in San Manuel and felt that the appearance of the town did not reflect the spirit of the people,” she said. “My heart is in community service.”
The group is trying to get churches and students involved in keeping San Manuel looking good. They are also working with Pinal County to get some support. Businesses are welcome to help out and the group can use donations of garbage bags and gas for lawn mowers and weed trimmers. The more volunteers they have, the more work they can do. “If a lot of people do a little consistently, it will make a big difference,” said Debbie.
