The Panthers’ softball team defeated the Miami (AZ) Vandals in both games of a double-header last Thursday to open its season. The Panthers won the first game, 15 – 12, and completed the sweep by winning the nightcap, 13 – 8. It was a strong offensive showing by the talented Panthers.
Gabby Salcido homered twice in the first game as the Panthers scored five runs in the sixth to tie the game and scored four more in the seventh to win it. Cierra Navarrette also homered in the opener.
The Panthers had a total of 10 extra base hits, including the three combined homeruns by Salcido and Navarrette.
Phalicitee Thomas and Hunter Flanagan each recorded three hits in the winning effort. Sophomore Ivie Lopez pitched a complete game to get the win.
After a game at Hayden on March 4, the Panthers play at Salt River on March 11. Game time versus Salt River is 4 p.m.
