Mayor’s Minute: Hot Summer Projects…

Superior Mayor Mila Besich-Lira

The Summer heat is upon us and we are fortunate that the mornings and evenings do give us some relief from the heat.  There are lots of great projects being worked on here in town.

By now many of you have noticed the new street signs that have been installed.  I have heard many positive remarks about the signs. One resident even explained that she had never seen a street sign for her street in the many years she has lived in Superior.  Funding for that project came from a grant through the Central Arizona Governments and Arizona Department of Transportation.

Our first major road project on our town roads will be complete.  The hump at Sunset and Gomez is now smooth. The main corridor of Sunset and Panther Drives have received a slurry seal.  This project cost over $100,000, fortunately paying for this project also helps us to reduce our Highway User Revenue Fund debt that we owe back to you, the taxpayers.  Due to a new state law the town will be required to pay back our road fund at the rate of $250,000 a year.  To do this the Council has adopted a plan and schedule to prioritize road improvements throughout town.

The Council approved a contract for services with Odonetto Construction to help re-fence our airport and grade the runway.  We have received many warnings from the FAA about the cows that enjoy resting on our airport runway. The new fence will keep them out of the runway and the grading will allow for airplanes to land safely.  The funds for this project were paid from the funds that the town received when we sold part of the airport land to ADOT for the expansion of the highway.

In a few weeks, the old “Welcome to Superior” sign will be re-installed as the US 60 expansion is completed.

The Library will once again be hosting Summer Reading and the Pool is open for everyone to enjoy.  You can most definitely find some relief from the heat at our local library and at the pool.

  Together, We are Superior.

Mayor Mila
