In 2004 Michael Alvarez began commuting from his home in Mesa to a job at Resolution Copper.  A graduate of the Superior High School class of 1991 he had seen the ups and downs of Superior but on his daily commute on Magma Avenue to his job at Resolution Copper he saw an opportunity.  A set of small cottages that were owned by his cousin and still in the family sat vacant and boarded up.  He began talking to his cousin about a potential business opportunity to offer short term or long term rentals on the tiny homes.  After years of careful remodeling and interior design the Copper Cottages were opened.  The furnished homes are available for both short term and long term rentals.

The decision to open the rentals grew another business venture idea for Michael and his relatives they have decided to expand into jeep tours, ATV and bike rentals.  They anticipate opening that business later this year, just in time for the busy winter visitor season.

Michael explained that he opened these businesses knowing that the full demand has not quite hit the local economy yet, but he sees the potential for the growth of these businesses as the community becomes more of a destination with the opening of the Magma Hotel, garden expansion at Boyce Thompson Arboretum and the overall marketing of the community through the events and festivals that are growing in Superior.

Soon Michael will become an empty nester and he plans to make Superior his full time home and devote more time to the expansion of his business which will include a store front on Main Street, transportation services similar to a taxi and shuttle service to and from the airport and into the valley.  Michael’s business partner and cousin Steven Lopez who is also planning on relocating to Superior from Whittier, California will be working diligently to expand their services.  They are also assisted by local resident David Lopez who helps with the day to day operations of the company.

Michael’s advice to his fellow business owners and budding entrepreneurs: “Make sure you are comfortable with your plan, pace yourself and most importantly write down your dreams and goals to set your vision”.
