Monday, May 5 marks a day of cultural celebrations in the Hispanic community. The holiday which has great historical significance has also been marketed as a holiday which is geared towards excessive drinking of margaritas and Mexican beer. One website calls the holiday the St. Patrick’s Day of the Hispanic community.

For several years now the Superior Substance Abuse Coalition has been working diligently to educated the community, especially the youth, on the dangers of using drugs and alcohol. This year they will once again host their drug and alcohol free Cinco de Mayo Celebration. The event is free to the public and will feature live entertainment by D.J. Supietown, Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior and Mariachi Ensueno. The Cinco de Mayo King and Queen will be crowned during the event. The King and Queen were selected by members of SSAC after reviewing essays from students at the Superior Junior Senior High School. Activities for the day will include a rock wall and pinata break for all age groups including Nana’s and Tata’s. The event is scheduled to run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Magma Club located at 34 Kumpke Court in Superior.

The event is being sponsored by Superior Optimist Club, Adelante Juntos Coalition, Resolution Copper Mining, Town of Superior, Pinal County Sheriffs Office, Pinal County Attorneys office and many local businesses.
