To the Sheriff: how is doing something eight times still a mistake?

An Open Letter to Sheriff Paul Babeu,

This is in regards to your employee Jayme Valenzuela who is Jail Commander.  He is Mayor of Superior and has committed felony by using more than two thousand dollars of town funds for personal use.  An investigation is being done by the DPS.  (We hope!)

You became friends with Valenzuela in 2008 when he promised his support and his ‘town’ of voters to you for your run for Sheriff.  You succeeded and you rewarded him with the Jail Commander job in spite of the fact that PCSO advised not to hire him again due to poor performance.

At this time, the majority of the Town has asked the Mayor to resign.  He says that using the town debit card eight times over a period of at least fifteen were mistakes.  Your PCSO Spokesman Tim Gaffney, also one of your Elite Squad, said that since Mr. Valenzuela had paid the money back it was a non-issue.

Perhaps you feel that way too?  Perhaps the rest of us in Pinal County can just commit mayhem and take whatever we want from our neighbors, then give it back months or years later, and your department wouldn’t blink an eye?  We gave it back, didn’t we?  I think the PCSO would be out of a job in a few weeks!

Mr. Babeu, if you want to help yourself, you will help the people of Superior!  Ask Mr. Valenzuela to step down as our mayor so we won’t be strapped by a long and costly recall election.  Our town is already broke, which the mayor keeps telling us.

You are facing a primary election in August for the First Congressional District and if you stonewall us in not helping, you can be sure you will receive zilch votes from the Superior voters.   If you are foolish enough to believe Gaffney’s comment that this was a mistake eight times over, then I do not want you handling our affairs in Congress!
