John Thomas Zarate-Cox, USAF, son in law of local para-professional, Liz Zazueta, lets students know he is thankful for their appreciation and  thoughtfulness.

First Graders at First Ave. Elementary School in San Manuel surpassed their monetary goal for Girl Scout Cookies for American troops stationed overseas by more than $100, thanks to the help of students at the Jr. Sr. High School, according to first grade teacher Isabel Austin.

Seeing the picture of Liz Zazueta’s son in law, and his fellow Airmen enjoying “Cookies for the Troops” sparked enthusiasm in First Grade Bulldogs.

John Thomas Zarate-Cox, United States Air Force, and son-in-law of local school para-professional, Liz Zazueta, received “Cookies for the Troops” while deployed to Afghanistan.

“The cost of a box of Girl Scout Cookies went from $4 to $5 this year, after not changing for more than 10 years,” said Tonya Harre, mother of Girl Scout Tabitha Kellam, the local princess of Girl Scout cookies.

Local students will contribute approximately 70 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to the goal of 20,000 boxes set by Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona.

First Grade Bulldogs have collected money for Girl Scout cookies for troops serving overseas for the third year.

First graders from Isabel Austin and Linda Ramsay’s classes joined with the rest of First Avenue Elementary and San Manuel Junior-Senior High School to raise more than $350 for Girl Scout cookies.
