Miner swimmers continue to show improvement

  The Miner swimmers traveled to the Fort Lowell Pool in Tucson to compete with The Gregory School and Morenci High School.  This is the first year Morenci HS had swim team and this was their first swim meet ever.  After a weather delay, the meet was held as planned. 

  The Miner Boys Team won with 57 points, Morenci 40, Gregory 0.  The Miner Girls finished 2nd with 49 points, behind Morenci (64 points) and ahead of Gregory (1 point).   

  The Miner Girls were able to win 3 individual events and 1 relay at the meet.  Darien Apuron won the 200 Freestyle, BaiLee Hill won the 100 Butterfly, and Star Chavez won the 500 Freestyle.  The Relay Team of Rianna Estrada, Darien Apuron, BaiLee Hill, and Star Chavez won the 400 Freestyle with a season best time of 5:31.8.   Darien Apuron improved her School Record in the 100 Backstroke to a time of 1:06.81.

The Boys team won 7 events at the meet.   The Boys Medley Relay team of Hunter Hill, Evan Apuron, Jayden Smith and Michael Primero-Predgo won with a time of 2:02.1.  Evan Apuron won the 200 Freestyle in School Record Breaking time of 1:55.80, breaking the record of 1:56.39 previously set by Will Newman in 2015. Michael Primero-Predgo won both the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke.   Hunter Hill won the 500 Freestyle with a nice time improvement from the previous week. Jayden Smith won the 100 Breaststroke.  Evan won the 100 Butterfly.  Daniel Garcia, Michael Primero-Predgo, Hunter Hill and Evan Apuron teamed up to win the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 4:17.28.    

  Head Coach Alex Gort is excited about the progress of the team this season.

  “The Miners did very well at this meet,” he said.  “We had many personal best times including a couple School Records.  The Relays are starting to look very good.   We are right where we need to be at this point in the season.”    

  The Miners will host Walden Grove High School at the Mammoth Pool at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13.  The Miners will travel to compete in the Wolves Classic Invitational on Saturday at Chandler High School (8:30 am) which will give the Miners their first opportunity to qualify for the State Championship Meet to be held in November.
