Pinal County cuts recycling program. It ends Jan. 24.

By Sam Hosler, Mayor, Town of Kearny

We found out this week that there will be no recycling services in Kearny. The company which contracts with Pinal County announced that it is quitting services because too many people were depositing trash into the recycling bins. When trash is introduced everything in the bin is considered too contaminated for recycling. On top of that, the bin itself has to receive special cleaning to be placed back into service.

This service from Pinal County has been wonderful for Kearny. The amount of recycling has grown steadily over the past two years, and the county has provided more bins to meet our needs. For the life of me, I can’t understand why anyone would put garbage in a recycling bin.

Is there a remedy? I don’t know. Recycling is a small-margin business these days. I will do my best to find out.

Congratulations to the Rotary Club for their successful benefit golf tournament at the Kearny Golf Club. The weather was cool and clear, making for great golf.

Our Journey for a Clean Kearny group is offering assistance to people who need their yards cleaned up. If this is something you can ‘t do on your own, please give a call to Town Hall (363-5547) and ask for assistance. We’ll see what we can do together.

The Journey group will be be scraping and painting municipal buildings and soon will be branching into helping people paint their homes. You will also notice that desert plantings will be taking place around selected areas in town. If this kind of volunteer work appeals to you, please come to the Journey for a Clean Kearny meet at Town Hall at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10.

A word about myself: I am thankful for the thoughts, prayers, notes and phone calls. The surgery on my neck was greater than anticipated, so this bionic man will take a while before the pain goes away and the energy comes back. Thanks for your understanding.
