Local leadership is important, candidate says; Mila Besich-Lira announces mayoral run

A few short months ago, our community was made aware of a potential misuse of public funds by Mayor Jayme Valenzuela.   This news was shared not only at the local level but throughout the state and national news.  As a current member of the Superior Town Council, I was shocked, embarrassed, disappointed and angered by these actions and behaviors of our Mayor and former staff members.

Our residents were outraged about these allegations and they set out to file a petition to recall Mayor Valenzuela.  Those residents were successful in gathering enough signatures to require the town to call for a special recall election on Aug. 30, 2016.  Recalls are a last resort and the elected official who is being recalled has the opportunity to resign their position, if they so desire. Despite the urging of his fellow council members and many community members’ Mayor Valenzuela refused to resign.

This is proof positive that the leaders who reside closest to us can affect our lives, the quickest in either a good or bad way.  Superior needs a strong leader who is dependable, honest and accountable. Our residents need someone who is not afraid to work hard, and is available to serve the community.  That is why I have decided to run for Mayor of Superior.

While recall elections are disruptive, this one is unavoidable. The goal of my campaign is to highlight my leadership abilities and continue to prove myself as a humble servant to our community.  I am asking for your support because I believe in our community; we all want to see Superior prosper and return to greatness once again.  We need leaders who are willing to collaborate at all levels, leaders who are willing to think outside of the box; and, most importantly, we cannot succeed as a community if our leaders are not honest or trust worthy.  I am a proven leader and I know that I have the skills and abilities to serve as Mayor of Superior.  I am asking for your support on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016.

I am thankful for the unwavering support of my children, family and friends as I take on this next challenge in my life.  I attribute much of my life’s successes to their wisdom and support.
