In the days of big box stores and one stop shopping it is often easier to run into those stores and gather what you need. We often forget that in Superior the original big orange hardware store is Superior Lumber Yard owned by Arnold and Margaret Salazar. Their mottos is “If we don’t have it, they either don’t make it or you don’t need it”.
Arnold began his career in the hardware business in 1962 when we worked for Foxworth Galbraith in Superior. They moved him to a store in Nogales in 1962 but he knew he could do better for himself so he returned to Superior and opened Superior Lumberyard.
For 50 years the store has provided handymen and homeowners the supplies they need to get their jobs done; they have also been a supplier to local municipalities and the mining industry. Often times, for those repairing or remodeling older homes, the larger chain stores do not have the older pipes or fixtures that are available at Superior Lumber.
You can find everything from paint, pipes, lumber, tools and lots of other equipment you may need. It is worth a trip to the Superior Lumber before driving to the Valley. Another plus is that you will more than likely meet up with a friendly face and a few neighbors while you are there.
Arnold’s advice to his fellow business owners and future entrepreneurs: “Use common sense and plan to do a lot of hard work,” he said.
Arnold and Margaret would like to sell their store to another aspiring entrepreneur or business owner soon. “We would like to travel and go on vacation,” explained Arnold. “We can’t do that until we sell the store.”
