The Hayden-Winkelman schools were represented by 35 students, with 18 projects, at the Gila County Regional Science Fair on Thursday, March 3, at the Payson High School. Of the 18 projects submitted, nine took home ribbons for second or third place.
In the category of Animal Science Katrina Trevizo, Angelita Casillas and Robert Casillas placed 3rd in the Senior Division for their project “Cat-N-Dog”. Greace Corona and Leticia Ahumanda also placed 3rd, in the category of Behavioral & Social Science in the Elementary division for their project “Project Gummy Bears”.
Hayden-Winkelman students had several projects that were recognized in the category of Cellular & Molecular Biology. In the Elementary Division Fabian Elvira took 2nd place with the project “Corrosiveness of Soda”; and, for the Junior Division, Damien Arbizo and Andrew Sims took 2nd place with “How many matches”, while Lyana Romero, Leticia Valenzuela and Analicia Ahumada took 3rd place for “How does water turn into ice instantly?”.
In the category of Chemistry, Miranda Gomez took 3rd place in the Elementary division with her project “Popcorn”. For Earth & Planetary Sciences there was a three-way tie for 3rd in the Elementary Division, including Nicholette Lagunas for “Frightening Lightning”. Another tie for 2nd place, this one in the Elementary division for Environmental Sciences included Damien Smith and his project “”Is it a cloud? Is it fog?”; in the Junior Division of the same category, Diego Garcia, Katie Thompson and Raymond Ahumada won 2nd place for “Phonebook Friction”.
