Copper Basin residents showed their appreciation for local volunteer fire departments by attending last weekend’s Fill the Boot fundraiser.
The event, co-hosted by the Winkelman and Kearny Volunteer Fire Departments, raised more than $2,000 to be shared equally between the departments and will be used for unexpected safety needs, equipment, or rainy-day requirements over and above what the towns provide.
“The men and women on our volunteer firefighter teams put their lives on the line each time the fire bell demands their attendance,” said Kearny Councilman Tom O’Connor, who attended the fundraiser. “Safety clothes, gear and vehicles are required to be ready at all times without question. The battle against something that doesn’t care about you or me or anything at all can only be fought by winners and our towns have the best!”
This will not be the last chance to honor plus offer your appreciation and of course some cash.
“We owe our support to our firefighters in both towns as well as all firefighters throughout the world,” O’Connor added. “Our town dollars only go so far and hopefully at least meet the minimum needs. These events provide the much-needed padding for those just in case moments.”
Saturday’s event, organized by Kearny Fire Captain Gary Stepke, provided something fun for all ages including a cornhole tournament, seeing friends and enjoying a beautiful full moon.
According to Captain Stepke, the boot will remain in place for the duration.
