Along the Gila: Moved Recently? Did You Update Your Voter Registration?

Don’t miss your chance to vote.

Pinal County reminds new voters (or anyone who has changed residence) that they must register by Tuesday, October 10, in order to vote regarding Propositions 416 and 417. These two propositions would establish the Pinal Regional Transportation Plan and fund it through a ½ cent raise in the sales tax.

For the first time on a county-wide proposition, voting will be done entirely by mail. There is still provision, however, for personally dropping off the ballot on election day, Tuesday, November 7.

An informational mailing regarding the propositions has already gone out in the mail. Additional copies of the brochure are available at Kearny Town Hall, and a large map of the proposed roads and highways is on view there.

The Kearny Fire Department a free event for the community on Wednesday, October 10. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. the Fire House will be open, the trucks will be out for viewing, and tables and chairs set up for everyone to enjoy the hot dogs with all kinds of toppings, as well as free drinks. The cooks and servers are the wonderful volunteers who give their time and energy to constant training, maintenance of all equipment, and readiness to respond to fire and many other needs. This is a great night for kids, who get to explore the equipment. The event falls within Fire Prevention Week, October 8-15. Take some time this week to explore your own residence and yard to see if anything is a fire hazard and get rid of it.

Next time you’re at Norm’s IGA in Kearny, walk to the back of the store, between the meat and dairy departments, and look up at the mural over the door. It’s a local homage to the Copper Basin, with a view of the Copper Basin Railroad’s tracks stretching to Teapot Mountain. A large clock is a strong element of the design. The mural is by Kearny artist Jennifer Cude, and we thank her for her powerful vision. Norm’s IGA is becoming a tourist destination all on its own!

I haven’t picked up on much new in the region this week. By the time you read this, I will have attended the Diocesan Convention of the Episcopal Church in Scottsdale as well as a two-day work session with the Smithsonian Institution at the Amerind Foundation in Dragoon. Next week I hope to return with some good news from ASARCO and more on events around the Copper Basin.
