Wayne Newman’s progression to the USA National Track and Field competition in Baltimore, Maryland began when he took the Arizona Division IV State Titles in the 110 and 300 hurdles.
Wayne will be a senior at San Manuel high school for the year of 2012 – 2013.
His times in the 110 and 300 hurdles at the High School State Championships held in Mesa, Arizona on May 11 and 12, 2012 were 14.80 and 39.78 respectively.
Wayne then competed at the Meet of Champions at Brophy Prep High School on May 16. The Meet of Champions is a competition where the top high school finishers of each division are invited to compete against each other.
Wayne took first in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.77 finishing his high school year undefeated in the 110 hurdles. He took second at this meet in the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.28.
Wayne then competed at The USA Track and Field Team events in Mesa, on June 16. He competed in the 400 hurdles for the first time ever and took the state title with a time of 56.42.
After Wayne won the 400 hurdles, he ventured to Coolidge, to assist the Sea Lions Swim Team in their victory over the Coolidge Swim Team winning all four races in which he was entered. He then drove back to Mesa that evening to take the state title in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.13.
These 110 hurdles was a closely contested race where Wayne came from behind and edged out his next closest competitor by three hundredths of a second. After placing in the USA Track and Field state competition, Wayne became eligible to compete in the USATF Regionals in El Paso, Texas.
The following week, Wayne competed in the Sprinter’s Showcase, a national meet in Chandler, on June 22 and 23, 2012. He placed fifth overall in the 110 hurdles, with a time of 15.28, and took second overall in the 300 hurdles with a time of 38.74.
In the USATF Regionals held on July 7 and 8, Wayne raced in the 400 prelims, and placed a second in his heat with a time of 57.47. He then competed in the 110 hurdle prelims that evening, winning his heat with at time of 14.76.
On Sun., Wayne competed in the 400 hurdle finals, taking third overall with a time of 56.99, and soon after took second overall in the 110 hurdle finals, with a time of 14.58, losing by six one hundredths of a second.
Wayne will compete at the Junior Olympic Nationals on July 23 through the 29, in Baltimore, Maryland.
