Superior, Arizona – The Superior Head Start Program, which began its new year on Thursday, Sept. 1 is heading toward its two -week Fall Break, which began on Monday, Oct. 5.
Committed to its focus on health and safety education, Head Start recently encouraged its students to participate in Rail Safety Education, with Jeremiah Reichelt and Gary Hernandez of Arizona Eastern Railroad visiting. As part of the program, the students viewed a Rail Safety DVD titled “Sly & Birdie,” and all of the children received a Rail Safety Goody Gift Bag.
After the presentation, the children recited the motto, “Look, Listen & Live,” then shared with the presenters, asking and answering questions.
All of the children were in agreement that the “… train is loud, it goes fast, it carries things people need and you don’t cross or walk on the railroad tracks.” One child asked, “How much does the train weigh?” Another child asked if the train had a radio. Other queries from students were, “Is it cold to ride in the train?” and “Have you run over something?”
The Head Start children receive a daily freshly cooked family style breakfast and lunch meal. This year the new food provider is Le’Fox Catering, which also provides a monthly international meal, flavored with educational information concerning the origins and use of the meal.
September’s International meal was an “Oriental meal.” The children ate rice, stir fry chicken with vegetables, and used chopsticks to eat their food. The children also cut, tasted, felt, and smelled Dragon Fruit.
One child commented, “it has things on it like a strawberry, I think it’s his cousin.” Another child said, “It has pepper things on it,” Another remarked, “I think it has little bugs on it.” One child exclaimed, “It’s pink just like my shirt!”
The children also participated in creating collages reflecting their new food experience and Rail Safety experiences.
All of the Head Start children have been actively participating in exploring the classroom environment and using various writing materials to create their own art and writing samples. The children have been focusing on strengthening their motor skills, role playing, planning, constructing and using cognitive and social interaction skills while exploring the developmentally appropriate materials.
