Superior Head Start 2015 Happenings

Superior, Arizona– October proved to be quite a busy month of interactive learning for the children of Superior Head Start. The students and staff have now begun a new month of fresh adventure and are looking forward to future months to come.

In October, the students spent time guessing what is in a real, fresh pumpkin, and learning the answer by slimy, messy process during which the children were encouraged to observe and draw conclusions. One child said, “it has bugs in it. Another stated, “You can’t eat it, ‘cause it will make you sick.” Whereas another child said, “I think it has a candle stuck in it.”

The children created collages using sand, dirt, leaves, yarn, glue, tissue paper and markers. By doing so, the children’s small motor skills continued to be developed with their art projects. An Open House was hosted by students and staff, with their artwork displayed throughout the classrooms, indoors and outdoors.

During Open House, the children were visited by the Superior Police Chief and the Superior Fire Department personnel. The children had such a great time along with their Silly Dress Up Day costume excitement. They learned how to stay safe, and about the “Stop, drop and roll.” procedure.

Later that day, they participated in a walking field trip to the Superior Senior Citizens’ Center where they sang finger-plays and paraded in their Silly Dress Up Day costumes. They also participated in the Gemini Hospice’s Pet Therapy session while at the Senior center. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to spend time forming friendships and learning to share with one another.

Says a Superior Head Start Staff member, “The children are encouraged daily to be independent with small tasks as it increases their sense of self esteem when they feel that “they can do things for themselves. From shaving cream to the freeze dance, the children have been busy. This program session includes practicing writing and recognition of their names, letters, shapes and numbers.”

The children recently completed their unit on Farm Animals with a visit from Chef Combo. They enjoyed tasting a Purple Cow milkshake, made by using a blender to mix 1% milk, 100% grape juice, low fat vanilla ice cream and banana slices.

On Wednesday, Nov. 25, just prior to Thanksgiving, the children will be visiting the Wild Cow Art Gallery. In December, they will visit the Superior His and Her Hair Company.

Says a Superior Head Start Staff Member, “The children and staff are thankful for the support of the parents, grandparents and volunteers and for the Town of Superior, its community members and local businesses.”

This year’s Head Start teaching staff members are: Hilda Cardenas, Site Manager/Family Community Advocate, LaToya Coronado Janitor/Kitchen Aide, Irene Navarro Classroom Support Aide, Assistant Teacher Sophia Cortes’ and Teresita Martinez Olmos, Teacher-PIC.
