Last week at a special dinner, the Kearny Elks honored local veterans and, in turn, were honored with a state award.

On Nov. 15, 2015, the Kearny Elks received an award from the Arizona Elks Association for a gain of three in membership for the Elks year 2014-2015. The award was presented by AEA Membership Committee State Chairman William Foucher to Exalted Ruler Charles Vega. Over the past year the Kearny Elks have had several members of our community join also.

The Kearny Lodge provides several programs that benefit the community such as Hoop Shoot and Soccer Shoot contests; they also provide dictionaries to the local third graders in Kearny and Hayden-Winkelman schools, food baskets at the holidays and assist the local food bank. At Christmas they take several children on a shopping spree to JC Penny’s then a pancake breakfast. They also provide scholarships to two students, plus recognize Students of the Month.

Another way they serve the community was in the way they honored the local veterans at Veterans Day. This year, the group was especially pleased to honor Korean War veteran Walter C. Romero and his brother, Joey, who is a veteran of the Vietnam War. Attending was Walter’s daughter Mary.

Any one interest in joining the Kearny Elks in serving the community in these manners, please contact the Kearny Elks at 520-363-5666.
