Kearny Council keeps Corso as interim chief; no discussion on contracting with PCSO

The Kearny Town Council fielded about a half dozen public comments during their monthly meeting last week. Those comments were all to encourage the Mayor and council to hire Interim Chief Corso as the full time chief of Police of Kearny. Several of the residents commented that Chief Corso is doing a good job for the Town and complimented the fact that he has moved to Kearny. Residents also presented a petition signed by locals to hire Corso as a permanent chief.

The Council was unable to respond to those comments because the item was not on the agenda for discussion but presented under call to the public. The council did have an executive session to discuss and evaluate Interim Chief Corso. In a phone interview, Town Manager Anna Florez confirmed that Chief Corso will remain the interim chief.

An editorial in theSan Manuel Minerlast week indicated that Kearny was negotiating with Pinal County Sheriff’s office to provide police services. Mayor Sam Hosler explained in a phone interview with Copper Basin News that there has been no discussion with PCSO to offer services.

“The town would not be able to afford those services,” he said, “even if we entertained the discussion. Our community likes their local police department.” Hosler has requested a copy of the email that was referenced to have come from officials in Kearny, the exact email was not brought to Mayor Hosler at this time.
