Kearny residents were concerned this week when their tap water was coming out in shades of brown and black in some areas.
The change in the water color was due in part to two reasons, said Town Manager Anna Flores. The town was performing pressure testing of the fire hydrants and the testing brought up sediments in the line. Those sediments along with the normally high levels of manganese caused the dark water.
While the pressure testing happens on a regular basis, the water took on the darker shades because the water filtration system was not working. Flores explained that the filtration system should be up and running efficiently within five weeks. The water color should return to normal, Flores said, as the sediments from the pressure testing have once again settled.
The water posed no health risk to anyone affected.
