The Superior Little League was founded in Superior in the 1960’s as the community of Superior began to grow. The field property was an agreement between the Smith, Hing and O’Donnell families who donated the land to be used as a Little League field.
For decades the field has been the home to young baseball and softball players, it has been the home of three teams who represented the state of Arizona at the Western Regional Little League tournament, 2016 being the year that Superior’s first girls softball team won the State Little League tournament to represent Arizona in Montana.
The league has survived the ups and downs of the community and over the past 10 years has seen a tremendous amount of improvement due to the integrity and dedication of the Little League Board of Directors. With the financial support of Resolution Copper and other corporate partners, the field now has a grass outfield and a score board, and the bathrooms have been remodeled along with the the electrical infrastructure being up grades. Grants and fundraisers have also helped to make these much needed improvements.
Superior has one of the oldest charter leagues in the state of Arizona. Unfortunately the league is in jeopardy of not having a 2017 season. Recent board elections did not produce a new board for the 2017 season and a majority of the existing board members are retiring from these volunteer positions. You can help keep this beloved community tradition alive by volunteering to serve as a board member of this important community organization, the board is holding another election meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016 at 6 p.m. at the Superior Little League field. The positions that must be filled for the season to continue are President, Vice President (s), Secretary, Treasurer, Player Agent and Safety Officer. If you are interested in serving on the board please contact Virginia Alonzo at 480-215-9144. You can read more about the board responsibilities at http://bit.ly/2dYNUV7. You do not have to have children in the program to serve.
