Hayden crushes Baboquivari in home opener

Hayden’s Julian Gonzales (82) runs over a Baboquivari defender.

The Hayden football team obviously enjoyed finally playing in front of its own fans as evidenced by last Friday’s lopsided 61 – 0 victory against the visiting Warriors in the Lobos’ home opener.

“We did well as a team,” Hayden head coach John Estrada said. “Our young kids got a lot of playing time, which is key to the future of our program.”

The win improved the Lobos’ record to 2 – 1. In their two victories, the Lobos have outscored their opponents, 117 – 8.

“Our defensive play executed well,” Estrada said. “Our senior leadership took over and did its job, and we were physical.”

Up next: The Lobos will host Arete Prep this Friday. The Chargers, who lost at Superior 72 – 15 last week, will be playing their second-straight road game.

“Arete Prep will spread us out,” Estrada said. “They pass the ball well. We’ll need to put pressure on the quarterback and our defensive backs will need to do their jobs.”

  Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
