The schools in the Copper Basin are starting another year soon, so be aware of increased activity in school zones and watch out for young people walking to and from school.

With the beginning of school, the Kearny swimming pool closes out its season. But it’s going out with a bang, because on Saturday, July 30, there will be a free swim day courtesy of the people at Resolution Copper. It’s from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. We thank Resolution Copper for this gift, and we congratulate pool manager Margie Casillas and her fine team for making our pool so welcoming and safe.

At the last Town Council meeting, Gus Stonecipher spoke movingly about the value of the pool to our community, and asked if a way could be found to extend the season. The simple fact that the town is short of funds makes his request not possible. But it is a good idea which should be pursued. Could we in the community, working with the Town Council, find a way to extend next year’s season? And, to take the dream a little further, would it be possible to acquire a splash park which could be open as soon as warmer weather begins? Splash parks are safe, fun, and less expensive to operate than pools.

The fire hydrant project continues to move along smoothly, and the bid will soon be let for road work on Mountain View, the 400 blocks of Essex, Fairhaven, and Greenwich, and the leveling and sealcoating of Alden Road. The road work should begin in a month or so. This will entail some detours and partial road blockages, especially on Mountain View (which is the road most in need of repair). Please be aware that these inconveniences will occur.

Yes, recycling is back. A large dumpster is located on Emery Road. A prominent sign marks the place and lists acceptable items for recycling. The yard is open Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Eagle One, the mobile veterans’ outreach center, will be parked in front of the Pinal County Courthouse in Kearny on Tuesday, August 16, and will be open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Please let all veterans know of this important service.

Finally, let us all welcome The Rev. George Kunnel who is now serving at Infant Jesus of Prague Church in Kearny. He replaces Father Alex Tigge, who is now serving full-time in Hayden and Winkelman.
