Mayor, Town of Kearny
Way to go, Kearny! The kickoff of Journey for a Clean Kearny this past Saturday was a success beyond all expectations. Everyone anticipated the day by cleaning and sorting and putting items out on the curb. On Saturday morning, volunteer crews with pickups and trailers were out before sunrise picking up items and placing them in the provided rolloffs on Jamestown Road and at the transfer station. At 8 a.m., people of all ages, from 6 to 85 or so, showed up to canvass the town for litter and garbage. Rose Bradford and the Senior Citizens group coordinated the fifteen different community group who volunteered to help.. In addition, there was a slash pile at the airport, a motor oil drop at the Town Yard, and the collection of old batteries at Rip’s NAPA store.
The town will have a fuller “thank you” for the volunteers later on. Did we make a difference? You bet! And now, as chairperson Rose Bradford has expressed, let’s start pulling weeds and trimming trees and keep this great start a living, ongoing thing.
On another note, we have experienced a rash of burglaries in Kearny. This is distressing, but it does not mean that Kearny is going downhill. It means that someone is taking advantage of us. I have full confidence in our Police Department. Please, if you see something amiss, call the police and let them know. Once they have evidence for a strong case, there will be arrests. The same can be said of anyone trying to deal drugs in this town. You might think you’re getting away with it right now, but right now will not last for ever.
On a happier note, this Saturday is the grand opening of Rip’s NAPA Store, complete with a poker run and car show organized with the help of the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce. Alden Road will feature well over a hundred cars (approaching 150 at this point). This is going to be a great event, and we are proud to welcome Rip Vache to Kearny and the Copper Basin. Be sure to enjoy the show and meet all the people who come to town.
I have a hunch, a solid and positive feeling, that many good things will be taking place in the next few months. I hope to bring more good news as we move deeper into 2015.
