Mayor, Town of Kearny

The Journey for a Clean Kearny continues with another grand cleanup of the town on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Volunteer workers will scour the community to eliminate all that prevents our town from being beautiful.

The overall cleaning scheme is similar to the successful cleanup we had this Spring. All volunteers will be asked to come to Town Hall to receive “marching orders” and sign a volunteer liability waiver. Two large rolloff containers will have been placed on the lot at the corner of Jamestown and Tilbury, and workers will be on hand at the Transfer Station on Hwy. 177. Additionally, people will staff the oil collection center at the Town Yard and the burn pile near the airport. Rip Vache and the people at NAPA will gladly accept old car batteries.

Rose Bradford is coordinating the groups and individuals who will spread out over the town to pick up litter. Bags will be provided, and people are asked to wear good shoes, gloves, and headgear.

Just as before, volunteers with trucks and trailers will go up and down the streets, assisting residents with curbside pickups.  The only difference this year is that we ask that all yard waste be separated from other trash, and we ask that residents, if at all possible, assist the volunteers with loading the trash.

All townspeople are asked, during the next week before the cleanup day, to rid their homes and yards of everything they can think of! Beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 14, an area on the vacant lot on Jamestown will be marked off with tape as an area to receive larger items, such as appliances and large metal items.

There are some items which cannot be disposed of at this time, including paints or poisons. However, if the paints are dry in the bucket, they can be received. Tires also cannot be received.

If you have items for curbside pickup, please call Town Hall at 363-5547 and give the address. Remember that Town Hall is not open on Friday the 16th, so call before that date.

I hope we can get into the spirit of this, which is a time of people helping people to beautify our community. Do you have an elderly neighbor who needs some help? Or do you know of a vacant lot which needs cleaning? Does someone need assistance tearing down an old shed? Let’s all pitch in to help each other during the days ahead so we will have plenty of items to be picked up on Saturday, Oct. 17.

If you have any questions, please call Town Hall (363-5547). My thanks go out to all the members of the Journey for a Clean Kearny Committee, who have worked so hard. Now, let’s all do everything we can to junk up the curbs on Friday, Oct. 16, and let’s have a smashing day picking it all up on the 17th!
