The turkey vultures have begun their move back to live with us. The poppies didn’t “pop” much this year, but the brittlebush plants have given us a spectacular display. The mornings are cool and the afternoons are great.
The Apache Sky Casino is now open. The San Carlos tribe pushed hard to make this early opening, and they deserve our thanks. The casino is already providing jobs and other economic advantages to the whole Copper Basin. They are looking for good support from the north Tucson area, but I suspect that more than a few people from the East Valley will trek this way to enjoy the beauty. It is good that more than a few people from Hayden, Kearny, Winkelman and Dudleyville are employed at the casino now,
Have you noticed the number of hikers in Kearny? The number of people on the Arizona Trail has really grown. Many of them make their way into Kearny for rest and a good shower, and a good meal. Some of them have also worshiped in Kearny’s churches. Several people, including our own Gerry Kaufhold, have been helping them make their eight miles into town from the Kelvin Bridge and to assist them to get on their way again. Wouldn’t it be great to have an organized way to plan for their arrival, given them a lift in and back again, and make friends for Kearny on the way? I don’t think many of us yet realize what a great economic benefit the hikers are.
Winkelman was subjected to a brush fire this last week, a reminder to us that a green spring always means a dry summer with plenty of vegetation to burn. Now is the time for all of us to clean our yards of all flammable material. If someone needs help, lend your aid. If someone is sick or shut-in, please call Town Hall (520-363-5547) and see if one of our Journey for a Clean Kearny volunteer can do the job. Increased beauty also means increased safety.
This Sunday, April 5, is Palm Sunday and the following Sunday is Easter Day. Take part in the spiritual activities offered in our churches. Note also that the ARTus Art Group is having its annual free exhibition on Palm Sunday, April 5, at Ray Hall of Good Shepherd Church in Kearny from 2 to 4 p.m. Come see the art, meet the artists, and enjoy refreshments with your friends. Then on Saturday, April 29, the Parish of Infant Jesus of Prague is holding a benefit golf tournament beginning at 8 a.m. at the Kearny Golf Course. This should be a great tournament. Food and drinks will be sold. I’ll say more about this tournament later in the month.
