Superior Unified School District received official word on Monday that they were the recipients of $100,000 for necessary repairs to the Superior Junior Senior High School. The funding is coming from the Arizona School Facilities Board.
The funding was requested to pay for the windows and external walls to be sealed and to have the exterior painted. For several years the district’s maintenance crews have been dealing with leaking walls and windows during rainstorms.
The funding will aid in repairing those problems. Many of the problems at the school have stemmed from when the building settled and moved with the ground. Superintendant Pete Guzman acknowledged maintenance director Ignacio Godinez for submitting the requests and requesting bids for the project. “We expect to have these repairs started very soon,” explained Guzman.
Superior Junior Senior High School was the first school to be built in the state using the Arizona Schools Facilities board funding process. The school is planning on requesting additional funding to also repair library floor and kitchen drainage that were damaged when the building moved.
The solar panel project will be completed this week. “The solar panels will save the district $400,000 to $500,000 over 20 years,” explained Guzman. The district will be able to save this money by locking in the cost of electricity. After the 20 year lease on the equipment the system will belong to the district.
The school marquee that was damaged due to vandalism will be back in operation sometime in Jan. explained Guzman.
