The Superior Panthers’ softball team played in arguably the most exciting game of the playoffs against Yuma Catholic. After coming from behind to tie the game in the seventh inning, 10 – 10, the Panthers saw Yuma Catholic score one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn the victory, 11 – 10. The first-round loss ended the season for the Panthers’ but did nothing to cloud their optimism for next year.

“This game was invaluable for the girls’ experience and expectations for next year,” head coach Cheryl Lopez said after the game. “They know they are able to compete against any team out there. The girls were disappointed because knew they could have won. They played the most exciting game of their year.”

Coach Lopez said the whole team played well and that it was her team’s best performance of the year. “No one player stood out because everybody did their part and played to the best of their ability.”

Assistant Coach Dora Salcido was recognized by Coach Lopez for her time and dedication to the team. Coach Salcido’s work with the girls started before most of them entered Sr. High School.

“Dora and her husband have been coaching Superior girls in little league softball for years,” Lopez said. “They also have been coaching a travel team that most of the girls participated in, allowing them to build their individual and team skills. Her experience working with this team was the key to our success.”

The Panthers improved their win total by five games this year and with a very talented chore group returning, they expect to improve by at least that many games next season.
