The Lady Lobo volleyball team had a busy week playing three scheduled matches, two of the matches away games, and then headed to Pima on the weekend to play in the Lady Roughrider Volleyball Invitational.
The Lady Lobos’ first match was against the Lady Monsoons of Mesa Prep on Mon. on their court. The first set was a close affair; with the score tied at 19 to 19, Marlisse Perez went to the service line and put some distance in the score.
The Lady Lobos finally took the first set with a 25 to 20 score. The second set was a bit easier for the Lady Lobos when Melinda Marinez went to the service line and put the set away with nine straight service points to win the set 25 to 9.
The third and final set had Danielle Paton and Marlisse Perez doing the damage from the service line with their serves as the Lobos took the third set and the match with a 25 to 19 score.
The Lady Lobos were on the road again on Tues. making the long haul to Ft. Thomas to try to even their record against the Lady Apaches who earlier in the season handed the Lady Lobos a five set defeat.
This match was almost identical as the first. The Lady Lobos took the first set, playing good volleyball talking and defending well, with a score of 25 to 20. The Lady Apaches came back in the second set taking a big 4 to 12 lead early in the set and never looked back not allowing the Lobos to land their serves in the 15 to 25 win.
In the third set, the Lady Apaches took a 19 to 23 lead after two rounds of serves and looked like they were on their way to another win but the Lady Lobos would have no part of it as they played hard and took the win 26 to 24.
The fourth set was equally exciting with both teams playing hard. After two rounds of serving and the Lady Lobos in command with a score of 24 to 22, the Lady Apaches fought back and took the fourth set to tie the match at two sets apiece with a 24 to 26 win.
The fifth and final set seemed like neither team wanted to win as both kept breaking each other’s service until the last when the Lady Apaches finally took a 6 to 11 lead after a round of serving and took advantage of the Lady Lobos inability to land their serves to win the fifth set and the match with an 11 to 15 score.
The Lady Lobos next match was against the always-hard playing Lady Vandals of Miami High School. The Lady Lobos played equally hard taking care of business in the first and third sets winning with lopsided scores of 25 to 14 and 25 to 13 and played equally hard in the two lost sets dropping the second set with an 18 to 25 score and the fourth set with a 20 to 25 score to set up the exciting fifth set.
In the fifth set, the Lady Vandals broke out to a 1 to 6 lead early in the match when the Lady Lobos could not land a serve.
After one round of serving the Lady Vandals had a commanding 5 to 10 lead and extended it to 9 to 12 when Marlisse Perez went to the service line and hit for five straight service points to give the Lady Lobos another hard fought win with a fifth set score of 15 to 12 to defeat the Lady Vandals for the second time this season.
The Lady Lobo JV were not as lucky uncharacteristically losing two of their three matches. The Lady Lobo JV dropped their match against the Monsoon JV in three sets with scores of 18 to 25, 25 to 12 and 12 to 15.
Maybe it was the long hot trip or the sitting at a traffic stop for construction for a long time that affected them but the Lobo JV did not play their usual hard game dropping the match to the Apache JV in two sets with scores of 19 to 25 and 12 to 25.
The Lobo JV were back in form for their match against the Miami Lady Vandal JV easily defeating the Vandal JV in two sets with lopsided scores of 25 to 13 and 25 to 13.
There was no report on the outcome of the Lady Lobos trip to Pima for the Lady Roughrider Invitational on Saturday.
The Lady Lobos have two matches scheduled for this week playing the Lady Braves of San Carlos on Tues. Oct. 2, 2012 and board the bus for a trip to Coolidge to take on the Imagine Prep team on Thurs. Oct. 4.
The Lady Lobos were scheduled to have the following week off for fall break but will travel to Superior on Tues. Oct. 9 for the makeup of the Sept. 5 match that was postponed because of damage to the Superior court.
