Franky Renteria (106, 2nd), Carlos Salas (120, 6th), and Michael Sanchez (HWT, 6th) all placed at the 25th Annual Mt. View Duals Tournament last weekend.

The Miners came away from the 16-team tournament winless in their seven matches. Despite the uncharacteristic showing at Mt. View, head coach Daniel Najera said the wrestlers who competed showed well.

“It was tough tournament,” Najera said. “The 7 boys that suited up wrestled hard. We scored as much points as we could but more importantly they showed a lot of heart and wrestled impressively through a lot of distractions.”

Renteria, a freshman, made his second appearance in a finals match. Salas and Sanchez were able to make it to consolation placing rounds.

Salas, a sophomore, earned Wrestler of the Week honors for his performance. He was able to overcome a 14 point deficit by securing the pin with only seconds remaining in his placing match. Najera added that Salas “had a great tournament.”

“Our young wrestlers are anchoring our team,” Najera said. “I was very happy to see them having success. They work hard and it has paid off.”
