I had surgery on my lower back a week ago, and after staying home for a few days, I’m eager to be out and about seeing people. This is the best time of year for that. Our winter residents are returning, and I’m glad to reconnect with them. There are many community events coming up this month and the next, and the weather couldn’t be better for doing things.

This Saturday is the Great Pumpkin celebration at 4 p.m. Part of Alden Road will be closed off allowing all our children a safe place to wear their Halloween costumes, take part in the Trunk or Treat, and be introduced individually to the community. The parents and grandparents are out too (sometimes in costume themselves), carrying a brace of cameras and cell phones.

The Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce is to be commended for making all this possible.

Halloween itself is on Monday night, the 31st. I took a look at my front yard, and I realize that it needs attention for the safety of the children. Please join with me in these simple preparations:

  1) Clear up any clutter. The children are quite excited, and their masks sometimes obscure their vision. Garden hoses and such should be put away. 2) Improve the outdoor lighting. In my case, I have a burned out flood lamp to replace. I recently stepped up the wattage on the door light. 3) Be present! We always sit on our front porch to receive the children and pass out candy. That also gives us the opportunity to say things like, “Look out behind you! You’re close to a cactus.”

Our volunteer Fire Department and our E.M.S. personnel will be on the streets with the fire truck and the ambulance distributing glow-lights. Kearny parents are really good at watching over their children. Still, especially where lots of people are gathered, danger exists. When parking to let children out, give space between your car and others, and prevent your children from darting out onto the road. Be sure to park on the proper side of the road (with the passenger side to the curb) and don’t double park at any time.

Now, relax a bit and smile. You are prepared, and your children can have a happy night.

The next weekend is going to be just as busy, with the car show, two golf tournaments taking place in Hayden and Kearny, and the Rotary Club’s steak fry at the General Kearny Inn. I’ll say more about that next week.
